    A couple of the things:

    Redwoods are susceptible to fungal canker. This disease can permanently set them back to a point where they eventually die. It is quite common.

    Indians were the primary source of fires in the redwood forest during the pre-Columbian period, not lightning. You would have to go back to the pre-human period during the time of megafauna to find when lightning was the source of most burning.
