Tsunami Advisory

A TSUNAMI ADVISORY is in effect for the entire US Pacific seaboard and Hawaii after a massive undersea volcanic eruption triggered a 7.4 magnitude earthquake near Tonga.

"A tsunami capable of producing strong currents that may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures is expected," the National Weather Service said in a flash bulletin. "If you are located in this coastal area, move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas. Do not go to the coast to watch the tsunami. Be alert to instructions from your local emergency officials," the agency warned.

The National Weather Service has issued a tsunami warning for the entire California coast due to an underwater volcano eruption that caused a tsunami to hit the South Pacific country of Tonga. A tsunami capable of producing strong currents hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures is expected.

The NWS issued a tsunami advisory early Saturday morning starting, “Tsunami advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected or is already occurring.” Citizens are advised to “stay away from beaches and low lying coastal areas, and to avoid boating and fishing for the next serval hours.”

According to the NWS, waves may reach heights of 1 to 3 feet, and “strong rip currents and coastal flooding” are expected.

The NWS warns that the first surge may not be the largest and that a more significant surge could arrive much later than the first. High tide is expected to occur at around 9:30 a.m. along the Northwest California coast. Even though the initial wave was expected from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., additional waves and strong currents will continue.
