Stories to Build On: Finding the Spanish Past in Modern California
Mendocino County Office of Education and the Teaching American History Project for Mendocino, Lake and Sonoma Counties are pleased to announce a free historical lecture by Phoebe S. K. Young on Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at MCOE, 2240 Old River Road in Ukiah. Year 4 Teaching American History participants will meet after the lecture ends. Phoebe S. K. Young teaches and writes about the cultural and environmental history of the modern United States and the American West. Her first book, California Vieja: Culture and Memory in a Modern American Place (University of California Press, 2006), examined public memories of the Spanish past, the built environment, regional development, and race relations in Southern California between the 1880s and the 1930s. She has received fellowships from the Henry E. Huntington Library, the Smithsonian Institution, and the American Council of Learned Societies, which awarded her the Oscar Handlin Fellowship for 2010. This lecture is made possible through the Teaching American History Grant from the United States Department of Education and the Mendocino County Office of Education in collaboration with Sonoma State University and other partners. This lectureship is arranged through the Organization of American Historians (OAH) who promotes excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and presentation of American history, and encourages wide discussion of historical questions and equitable treatment of all practitioners of history.
