Sustainable Beekeeping Workshop at Solar Living Institute this Saturday

Buzzing with life: Sustainable Beekeeping workshop offers insights into hives

The Solar Living Institute in Hopland will offer a workshop on Sustainable Beekeeping this Saturday, May 31st, from 10am to 4:30pm, taught by Lovers Lane Farm owner Keith Feigin. This informative hands-on workshop is for anyone interested in the bees—hobbyists, established beekeepers, or bee advocates. Students will learn what is needed to prepare for acquiring bees and the skills to successfully manage their own bee colony sustainably at home. This workshop will help students gain an understanding of honeybee genetics and their importance to our agricultural landscape, and to discover sustainable beekeeping without using antibiotics or chemical compounds for pests and disease control. Class will cover basic bee biology, Biodynamic approaches to hive management, beekeeping equipment, methods for building up a spring colony, and swarm control.   Through open-hive inspections of Solar Living Institute bees, students will have an opportunity to experience the structure and wonder of an actual functioning colony of bees first hand. Instructor and Lovers Lane Farm proprietor Keith Feigin was born and raised in Ukiah. He started his beekeeping business on his family's ranch with two goals: to create a viable local business to strengthen the economy of Mendocino County, and to bring a great local product to the tables of his neighbors. Cost for the workshop is $80. Students can register by going to www.solarliving.org and clicking on "Upcoming Courses," or by calling 472-2468. The Solar Living Center, home to the Solar Living Institute and the Real Goods Store, is a world-famous demonstration site for renewable energy, green building, alternative fuels, permaculture, and sustainable living technologies. The 12-acre Solar Living Center is located at 13771 S. Hwy 101 at the south end of Hopland, and can be reached at 472-2450 or online at www.solarliving.org. — Roberta Werdinger, Writer, Publicist, Editor
