The End to Open Internet

The FCC and the End to the Open Internet airs at KZYX Friday, May 30

"All About Money" returns to KZYX on Friday, May 30, at 9 a.m., Pacific Time, with a special edition show on "The FCC and the End to the Open Internet".

Regulators are proposing new rules on Internet traffic that would allow broadband providers to charge companies a premium for access to their fastest lanes. The FCC’s proposed rules will produce a strong incentive for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to create congestion through artificial scarcity. Not only would this outcome run counter to the FCC’s broader goals, it actually undermines the so-called Section 706 legal basis for these rules.

Our guest is Todd O'Boyle, Director for Media and Democracy at Common Cause. We'll also be joined by other guests, including Amelia Deloney, Policy Director of the Center for Media Justice, and Jessica Gonzales, executive vice president and general counsel at National Hispanic Media Coalition.

Through Mr. Boyle, we are scheduling former FCC Commissioner Michael Copps for a future show. Commissioner Copps is now an advisor to Common Cause.

Our broadcasts are heard live at 881, 90.7, and 91.5 FM in the Counties of Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt, and Sonoma in northern California.

We also stream live from the web at www.kzyx.org

We may also archive shows at KZYX or post shows to the Public Radio Exchange.

Jessica Gonzales is executive vice president and general counsel at National Hispanic Media Coalition.

The group just released a statement which reads, “NHMC has long-opposed paid Internet "fastlanes", because they would be out of reach for nonprofits, independent creators and small businesses who have thrived under fair rules of the road. There are countless stories of Latinos and other people of color — who have long faced marginalization from and discrimination in the traditional media system — using the Internet to organize, produce news and entertainment content, and make a living. Allowing large corporations to pay more for better access to Internet users by definition creates a system devoid of equity. Everyone who uses the Internet should be incredibly concerned with this course of action and should raise their voices to encourage the FCC to change course.”

Todd O’Boyle is Common Cause’s Program Director for Media and Democracy. He joined Common Cause in September 2012 and is responsible for research, advocacy, and strategy for media reform. Before joining Common Cause, Todd worked as a political staffer. He has experience in grassroots political organizing and designing persuasive communications on the local, state, and federal level. He has a Ph.D. in Urban Affairs and Public Policy from the University of Delaware.
