Driftwood sculptures explore possibilities of wood

Family Fun event ties in with "Growth Rings" exhibit

Children and adults will have a chance to work with their own small piece of wood on Saturday, July 12, from 1 to 3:30 pm, when the Grace Hudson Museum offers a workshop on "Driftwood Assemblage Art" as part of its Family Fun at the Museum series.

Workshop members will fashion free-form driftwood sculptures using an array of materials. They will be invited to adorn driftwood with moss, leaves and flowers, using nails and screws to connect big pieces and glue and twine for smaller elements. A music program will follow the crafts session. The workshop is free after Museum admission and materials are included.

Visitors will be inspired by the presence of "Growth Rings: A Regional Retrospective of College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Graduates," with over 50 pieces of work ranging from desks, cabinets and chests to free-standing sculptures and including the work of James Krenov, the influential founder of the College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program.

The Family Fun at the Museum program is made possible with funding from the Sun House Guild. Pre-registration is encouraged and can be done by calling the Museum at 467-2836.

The Grace Hudson Museum and Sun House is at 431 S. Main St. in Ukiah. The Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm and from 12 to 4:30 pm on Sunday.
